Snips and Snails

SNIPS AND SNAILSby Michelle Lynn Senters

What are little boys made of?
What are little boys made of?
Snips and snails and puppy dog tails,
That’s what little boys are made of.
-traditional nursery rhyme

Grandpa told me I was snips and snails and puppy dog tails.

That’s all that he could see.

But after a day of little boy play,

he learned there’s more to me.

I was water fights and mosquito bites,

and a triple scoop ice cream,

cowboy hats and baseball bats,

and superhero dreams.

I was pirate ships and backyard flips

and football at the park,

sticks and stones and broken bones,

and monsters after dark.

I was bath time bubbles and slippery puddles,

and bedtime stories with bear,

hugs and kisses and sweet dream wishes,

and little hands folded in prayer.

I was snips and snails and puppy dog tails,

that’s what Grandpa could see.

But after a day of little boy play,

I showed there’s more to me.
