Sugar and Spice

SUGAR AND SPICEby Michelle Lynn Senters
155 words

What are little girls made of?
What are little girls made of?
Sugar and spice and everything nice,
That’s what little girls are made of.
-traditional nursery rhyme

Grandma told me I was sugar and spice and everything nice.

That’s all that she would see.

But after a day of little girl play,

she learned there’s more to me.

I was mud pies and dragonflies

and worms on a hook,

lemon drops and lollipops,

and adventures in a book.

I was hopscotch and butterscotch,

and grass between my toes,

scraped knees and stinging bees,

and flowers that tickled my nose.

I was grins and giggles and bedtime wiggles,

and whispers of little girl love,

starlight wishes and good-night kisses,

and prayers to the Lord above.

I was sugar and spice and everything nice,

that’s what Grandma could see.

But after a day of little girl play,

I showed there’s more to me.
